Grace

The walk down the pale blue hallway of the hospital to the elevators is silent, but Drew’s large frame beside me can’t be ignored. His muscles are leaner than Reid’s, but he’s taller, towering over me. His height was one of the first things that caught my attention. My five foot eight to his six foot two made me feel petite.

As we approach the elevators, the metal doors of the middle one open, and Gregory steps out.

His eyes light up when his gaze falls on me. “Well, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes in this somber place? Did Reid run you off already?”

I smile. “No, I came here straight after work, and I need to get home.” Or rather, I need not be in the same room as Drew and Reid. I honestly thought after finding out Reid was going to recover just fine, Drew would’ve headed back to Seattle today. Nothing was more important to the Drew I knew than getting ahead at work.

He nods and looks at his son. “You’re not leaving, are you?”

“I’m just walking Grace to her car. I’ll be back up in a few minutes.”

Gregory slowly nods as his eyes drift between the two of us, questioning, assessing. His stare is unsure. What is his conclusion? Is he wondering how we know each other, wondering about our history? Or is he wondering why I came to see one son but am walking out with the other?

Drew holds the elevator open when the doors start to close.

Another smile forms on Gregory’s face, but it’s not as cheerful as when he first saw me. “I’m glad I got to see you before you left. Have a nice evening, Grace.”

“Same to you, Gregory.”

Once inside, the elevator doors slide closed.

As we descend, Drew says, “I’ll be frank, after all those unanswered calls, I’d finally given up and never thought I’d see you again.”

“Your brother was in a car accident. Don’t confuse my text as anything other than sharing important information about your family. And we’re from the same town. You can’t honestly think that, Drew. Or should I call you Ford like your family?”

“You always knew exactly who I was, Grace. Only my dad and brothers call me Ford and some people around town. Old habits die hard. As for us seeing each other, it couldn’t have escaped your notice that I don’t come home often.”

“Avoiding me at all costs?” One corner of my lips turns up, teasing.

He chuckles, stuffing his hands in his jean pockets. “Maybe something like that. I think I knew if I saw you, I wouldn’t be able to stay away.”

That beating organ in my chest stutters. They’re just pretty words, heart. Calm yourself.

“As it is, I haven’t seen you in four years, and I still can’t stop thinking about you. Why did you ignore my Christmas present? My phone calls?”

I exhale. “Let’s not do this.”

His forehead wrinkles. “Is there something going on between you and Reid?”

“What?”

“You and Reid. Are you two a thing?”

A thing? I mean, we’ve shared a couple brief kisses and we have a good time together.
